FAQ's on Pickleball

History of Pickleball
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a court similar in size to a badminton court with a net that is lower than a tennis net. The game is typically played with a plastic ball and paddles made of wood or composite materials. The origins of pickleball can be traced back to the summer of 1965 when three friends – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum – were looking for a new game to play with their families. They had grown bored with the usual lawn games like badminton and wanted something new and exciting. The trio decided to combine elements of different games to create something new. They started by using a badminton net, a perforated plastic ball, and paddles that were similar to those used in ping pong. The court was roughly the size of a badminton court, and they used the lines of the badminton court as a guide.

When they played their new game for the first time, they quickly realized that the ball bounced a lot and was hard to hit with precision. Pritchard’s wife, Joan, suggested calling the game “pickleball” after the term used in rowing to describe a boat that is a mix of different types. From there, the game took off in popularity, particularly among older adults who enjoyed the low-impact nature of the game. Tournaments began to be held, and the game was played all over the country. In the decades that followed, pickleball continued to grow in popularity, particularly in retirement communities and among seniors. The rules of the game were refined and standardized, and it became an official sport with national and international governing bodies.Today, pickleball is played by millions of people of all ages around the world. It is a fun and engaging sport that promotes fitness, socialization, and healthy competition. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always something new to learn and enjoy about this fantastic game!
Rules of Pickleball

Pickleball is a fun and exciting game that’s played with a paddle and a plastic ball. It can be played indoors or outdoors on a court that’s about a third of the size of a tennis court.

Here are the basic rules you need to know to play pickleball:

  • Serving: The game starts with a serve, and the server must keep one foot behind the baseline while serving. The serve must be hit underhand and must go diagonally across the net, landing in the opponent’s service court. If the ball hits the net and lands in the correct court, the serve is still good.
  • Double Bounce Rule: After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before they can hit it. Then, the serving team must let the ball bounce once before they hit it. After these two bounces, the ball can be hit in the air or after one bounce.
  • Volleying: Once both teams have had their two bounces, they can hit the ball in the air before it bounces. This is called volleying. However, you cannot volley the ball if you’re standing inside the no-volley zone, which is a 7-foot area on both sides of the net.
  • Scoring: Points are only awarded to the serving team, and games are played to 11 points (with a 2-point margin of victory). If the score is tied at 10-10, the game continues until one team has a 2-point lead.
  • Faults: There are several things that can result in a fault, including hitting the ball out of bounds, hitting the ball into the net, or stepping into the no-volley zone and volleying the ball. If a fault occurs, the other team gets a point.
  • Switching Sides: After every odd-numbered point (1, 3, 5, etc.), both teams switch sides of the court. This helps to balance out any advantages or disadvantages due to wind or other factors.
  • Let Serve: If the ball hits the top of the net and lands in the correct service court, it’s called a let serve, and the serve is replayed.

Remember, the best way to learn how to play pickleball is to get out there and start playing!

Don’t worry too much about the rules at first. Just focus on having fun and getting the hang of hitting the ball with your paddle. Good luck and have fun!
